PETER BANKS
from Guitar Workshop Vol. 2 Sleeve;
Transatlantic Records 1976

Pete's basic training in music has been all with groups and bands. He spent six or seven years playing in various bands before being in the group Syn with Chris Squire on bass. That partnership led to the formation of Pete's first important band-of course, it was Yes. He then replaced Mick Abrahams in Blodwyn Pig. "It was a bit of a musical mismatch but great fun. The band died a natural death after about six months". His last band, Flash, enjoyed a measure of success in America. Currently he is putting a new band together with the bass player from Flash, Ray Bennett. Also involved are singer Sydney Fox and drummer Andy McCullough. On this album Pete plays a Gibson 335 with Picato ultra-light strings, played through a 100 watt Hi-Wattoamp with two 4 x 12 speaker cabinets. His foot pedals, mounted on a board, are a Fender volume/tone, a Duo-Fuzz, Wah Wah and tremolo and an MXR. Phaser. The whole board goes through a preamp and transformer knocking everything down totwelvevolts. On both of his tracks DancingAngel (Side 2, track 1), and Warning; Rumble Strips (Side 2, track 6), other musicians are Colin Townson keyboards, Martin Briley on bassand Andy McCullough on drums. "The structures of the songs depended a lot on the other musicians, in particular Andy. Dancing Angel is a pretty melodic tune which I used as a basic improvisation over the chords of E and A building to a crescendo ending. On the other track Warning; Rumble Strips, the rhythmic structure is more important". The latter title came from Pete seeing a road sign near the recording studio, which he felt fitted "the hectic feel of the track".
